RCMRD officially launches mandate as a Subregional Technical and Scientific Cooperation Support Centre

On the 27th of January 2026, the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) officially launched its mandate as a Subregional Technical and Scientific Cooperation Support Centre. This strategic hub is now fully operational, empowering member states to accelerate the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and drive national progress under the Convention on Biological Diversity CBD). The Chief Guest during the launch was Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary (Minister) for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, Dr Deborah Barasa. accompanied by Mr. Patrick Mucheleka, Chairperson of the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) Governing Council and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Zambia.
 

In this regard, RCMRD will cross-fertilize GBF Target 3 that RCoE leads on Protected and Conserver Areas reporting  with GBF Target 2 that is lead by FAO on Ecosystem Restoration.  The exercise will be to determine which restoration activities are ongoing on protected and conserved areas.
