Regional Centres of Excellence for the Green Transition

Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI)

Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) was conceived by the Parliament Act number 10 of 2016. TARI is a semi-autonomous body under the Ministry of Agriculture, which is mandated to strengthen the national agricultural research system and activate the transfer of agricultural technologies, taking into account the context-specific needs of farmers and other stakeholders within and outside the country.

National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO)

The National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO) is an agency of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF)

With the mandate to coordinate and oversee all aspects of public-funded agricultural research in Uganda.

Established as a body corporate by the National Agricultural Research Act of 2005, NARO comprises a Governing Council, a Secretariat and 16 Public Agricultural Research Institutes (PARIs) spread across the country.

Marondera University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (MUAST)

Marondera University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (MUAST) is a modern and unique institution of higher learning established through an Act (Chapter 25:29) of Parliament in 2015. The University is driven by the vision to be a leading global centre of excellence in the provision of technology driven sustainable green agricultural solutions”.

Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources

Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) is located in Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi. The university campus is typically found on the outskirts of the city, offering a serene environment conducive to academic pursuits. Being located in Lilongwe provides students and faculty with access to various governmental, agricultural, and natural resource-related organizations and opportunities for collaboration and research.

Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO)

The Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) was established under the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Act of 2013 to provide a robust legal and institutional framework for the coordination and advancement of agricultural research in the country. KALRO was formed as part of the Kenya Government’s efforts to restructure the National Agricultural Research System, ensuring a dynamic, innovative, and well-coordinated approach to agricultural and livestock research.

Institut de Recherche Agricole pour le Développement (IRAD)

The Institute of Agricultural Research for Development (IRAD) is a public administrative institution with scientific and technical status, possessing legal personality and financial autonomy. As the Cameroonian state's operational arm for agricultural development, IRAD is under the technical supervision of the Ministry of Scientific Research and Innovation. It also operates under the financial supervision of the Ministry of Finance.

French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD)

CIRAD is the French agricultural research and cooperation organization working for the sustainable development of tropical and Mediterranean regions. It mobilizes science, innovation and training in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Its expertise supports the entire range of stakeholders, from producers to public policymakers, to foster biodiversity protection, agroecological transitions, food system sustainability, health (of plants, animals and ecosystems), sustainable development of rural territories, and their resilience to climate change.

Forschungsinstitut Für Biologischen Landbau Stiftung (FiBL)

The Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) was founded in 1973 and has been situated in Frick (canton of Aargau) since 1997. It is one of the world’s leading research and information centres for organic agriculture and employs 300 people in Switzerland. The close links between different fields of research and the rapid transfer of knowledge from research to advisory work and agricultural practice are FiBL’s strengths. The competence of FiBL Switzerland is also sought after beyond the Swiss borders.
