Tools

This selection of analytical tools allows you to interact with detailed maps and statistics. All tools are relevant to all African countries, and some have a global dimension.

An interactive map showing data from the Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL) 2023 produced by the European Commission Joint Research Center

The Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) nexus page maps the trade-offs between those four sectors across Africa. Its datasets are grouped into Resources, Infrastructure and Socio-economic impacts: water availability and access, solar potential, dams and reservoirs, crop and woody vegetation cover, schools, health facilities and settlements, and the development outcomes linked to them.

The eStation is the European Commission Joint Research Centre's environmental monitoring system, which turns satellite imagery into near real-time indicators for Africa. This tool brings those products onto the Africa Knowledge Platform map — grouped into Climate, Habitats and Ecosystems, Human Impact and Pressures, and Marine and Coastal — so you can step through a product's time series, query its values for a country, a protected area or an area you draw, and chart how an indicator has changed.

The ACLED Africa Conflict Dashboard is an interactive spatial analysis and data visualization tool designed to track political violence, protests, and armed conflict dynamics across the African continent. Developed by the Africa Knowledge Platform (AKP) team, this application is powered by data from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), providing policymakers, researchers, and field actors with a near-real-time, geographic overview of regional security environments.

Nature Africa is a spatial prioritisation tool for the DRC Green Corridor. It brings standardised datasets on energy potential, infrastructure, productive activities, socio-political factors and the environment onto one planning grid, so you can explore each layer on the map and build a weighted multi-criteria suitability score.

From IATI data to multidimensional insights: explore environmental development investments across Africa through knowledge-driven, multidimensional analysis.

The Clean Energy Access Prioritiser (CEAP) is an open-source decision-support tool designed to identify priority areas for clean energy interventions and investments.  The spatial planning tool allows users to evaluate clean energy projects with a multi-sectoral approach, including environmental, socio-economic, cultural, and political aspects.

The Integrated Management Effectiveness Tool (IMET) is a decision-support tool intended to develop the planning-monitoring-evaluation process to improve protected areas (PA) management effectiveness. It is suitable for all PAs, regardless of their management and governance category. IMET is a computer application that can be downloaded for free, installed on a PC and used without an Internet connection.

Protected areas in Africa play a critical role in biodiversity conservation, supporting livelihoods, and mitigating climate change. This tool offers a comprehensive analysis of the dynamics of protected areas by country across the continent, examining their evolution, current status, and emerging trends. We employed a multi-disciplinary approach, integrating remote sensing data to capture the complex interactions between ecological systems and human activities within and around protected areas.

The conservation analyst is a web-based tool that integrates and weighs multiple criteria for spatial conservation planning allowing for the identification and selection of unprotected land areas presenting high values in terms of biodiversity and key ecosystem services.

Renewable Energy@New renewable generation capacity@CO2 reduction in Africa

The Clean Energy Access (CEA) is an analytical tool developed to provide geospatial context to electricity access in Africa@and specifically to factors that influence the deployment of decentralised renewables in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The IPC Mapping Tool is an enhanced interactive interface that shows a map of all the countries the IPC works in and allows you to download population data.
